Supplies Included in Equipment Rental Reimbursement – Clarification of Specific Supplies

In an informational notice dated March 3, 2015, the department reiterated policy that states accessories and supplies needed to use equipment during a rental period are considered to be included in the rental reimbursement. Although these items are available without prior approval, they must not be billed separately. In response to provider inquiries regarding that notice, the department is issuing this follow-up notice to specifically identify those accessories and supplies.
Attached is a list of Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes including, but not limited to, the accessories and supplies that the department expects providers to provide to the patient as part of the equipment rental reimbursement. Providers are also reminded that items included under warranty should not be billed to the department.
The department continues to review paid claims for supplies billed during previous equipment rental periods. If, after a thorough review, the department identifies any inappropriate payments for such supplies during a rental period, the department will initiate adjustments to recoup those funds.
