Supportive Living Handbook (SLF) Update - Temporary Absence

To:

Supportive Living Facilities

Date: October 15, 2004
Re: Supportive Living Handbook (SLF) Update - Temporary Absence

Effective August 1, 2004, the Department will begin reimbursing facilities to hold an apartment for up to 30 days per state fiscal year while a resident is temporarily absent. This applies to temporary absences that began on August 1, 2004, or later.

A temporary absence is an absence after which the resident intends to return to the facility such as a hospitalization or family visit. The resident continues to be responsible for room and board charges during any temporary absence.

An SLF resident entering another long term care facility, such as a nursing facility, must be discharged from the system even if the nursing facility stay is temporary (i.e., rehabilitation following a hospitalization). This is accomplished by completing a Form DPA 1156, LTC Notification, and submitting it to the local Department of Human Services office. No temporary absence reimbursement will be made while a SLF resident is temporarily in a nursing facility.

Temporary absences already submitted for time periods beginning August 1, 2004, or later will be converted to payable. If during a post-payment audit, these temporary absence days are determined to be non-payable, reimbursement for these days will be adjusted from subsequent payment.

If you have any questions, contact the Bureau of Long Term Care at (217) 557-0602.
