Re:
Updated Extension to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Season

Based on current respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) surge data and guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the RSV season has been extended further. Consistent with national trends, IDPH reports continued elevated RSV activity in Illinois, evidenced by the following:

  • As of March 14, 2026, Illinois’ RSV PCR positive test rate remains at approximately 8% (typically RSV rates are less than 3% by the conclusion of the RSV season at March’s end)

  • Continued high numbers of emergency department visits and inpatient hospital admissions

  • Reported deaths due to RSV this winter season, including among infants/children and adults over age 75 years

The Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) is therefore extending coverage of age- and risk-appropriate RSV immunizations through April 30, 2026, as follows:

  • RSV Recommendations for Children:

  • Immunization with monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab or clesrovimab) for infants under the age of 8 months if their mothers did not receive timely RSV vaccination with Abrysvo during 32-36 weeks of gestation.

  • Immunization with monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab) for children ages 8-19 months who are at increased risk for severe RSV disease and in their second RSV season.

  • Infants and children who have already received immunization with monoclonal antibody this season (which began October 2025) do not need another dose.

  • RSV Recommendations for Adults:

  • RSV vaccination for all adults 75 years and older, including those with no underlying risk factors, if they were never previously vaccinated for RSV.

  • RSV vaccination for adults 50-74 years of age who are at increased risk of severe RSV disease, if they were never previously vaccinated for RSV.
