This notice is to inform providers of non-emergency medicar and service car transportation that they are required under Public Act 95-501 and Administrative Code  89 Ill. Adm. Code 140.490(f) to certify that all drivers and employee attendants have completed safety training certification every three years. Medicar and service car providers receiving federal funding under 49U.S.C. 5307 or 5311 are not subject to the safety training program certification requirement during the period of federal funding. Documentation of the federal funding period must be made available to the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) upon request. 

The current list of State of Illinois Medicaid approved safety training providers is on the HFS website and shown below:

Nova Driving School - Chicago, Norridge

Safety Training classroom sessions are offered in our Chicagoland locations.  Nova Driving School also offers other supplementary licensing for other transportation careers. Training consists of one 8-hour session OR two 4-hour sessions, followed by an in-person final exam.

MedicarSafety.com Inc

Classroom training is available at the following Chicago locations: Moraine Valley Community College, Palos Hills, Illinois and Triton College, River Grove, Illinois.

Medicarsafety.com Inc. provides alternate classroom availability throughout the greater Chicago area and for those who are unable to travel to a fixed classroom location, the option of their trainers traveling to the provider’s location for training services. Training Program content may be viewed at: www.MedicarSafety.com.

Illinois Rural Transit Assistance Center at Western Illinois University

Classroom sessions are offered throughout Illinois. Rural Transit Assistance Center trainers will come directly to the provider’s facilities for a fee. Specific details are agreed upon between the trainer and provider.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale

Southern Illinois University Carbondale does not provide Medicar training and does not issue training certificates. SIU only maintains a list of independent trainers who offer Medicar instruction. Individuals seeking training must work directly with these trainers. Upon confirmation that training has been successfully completed by an approved trainer, SIU Carbondale’s Events and Outreach office issues the official Medicar identification card.

Specialty Needs Transportation (SNT)

SNT provides a Non-Emergency Transport Safety Course for a fee. Class dates and fee schedule will be determined by course director.
