Date August 5, 2024
Re:
Place of Service Code 27 – Outreach Site/Street Effective October 1, 2023

This notice informs providers that the Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) has implemented Place of Service (POS) Code 27, effective with dates of service beginning October 1, 2023, for the fee-for-service (FFS) program. Please contact the HealthChoice Illinois managed care organizations (MCOs) for their specific billing guidance regarding this Place of Service Code.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) created this Place of Service Code to allow provider reimbursement for services delivered to people who are currently unhoused. The code is defined as follows:

Place of Service 27 – Outreach Site/Street

A non-permanent location on the street or found environment, not described by any other POS code, where health professionals provide preventive, screening, diagnostic, and/or treatment services to unsheltered homeless individuals.

Any claim that needs to be billed with POS 27 that now falls outside of timely filing limits due to the HFS programming delay will be given a timely filing override. Providers should attach a completed 1624 Override Request Form when submitting the claim.

Questions regarding this notice should be directed to the Bureau of Professional and Ancillary Services at 877-782-5565.
