- HFS partnered with Cook County Healthcare (CCH) and Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) to develop and provide technical assistance, training, and support to prescribers related to DATA 2000 Waiver training, implementation of MAT in an office-based setting and creation of toolkit resources to assist and support prescribers of MOUD in an office-based setting.
- HFS partnered with University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) and U of I, to assess the overall needs of Medicaid eligible populations related to OUD and better understand the capacity of providers to serve those in need of OUD treatment.

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (U of I), School of Social Work, is seeking volunteers to participate in a study to better understand the role, experiences, and challenges for prescribers related to implementing Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid Use Disorders (MOUD). As one of the established objectives under the Substance Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities (SUPPORT) Act Section 1003 Demonstration Project, the Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) supports this study and associated activities to increase the understanding of substance use treatment capacity and encourages providers participation.
In September of 2019, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded Illinois a planning grant authorized under the 2018 Substance Use Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities (SUPPORT) Act. As part of Section 1003 of the SUPPORT Act, CMS, in consultation with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHQR) has been conducting a Demonstration Project to increase substance use provider capacity.
As the lead state agency, HFS used its planning grant to focus on increasing provider capacity and patient access to office-based MAT, for Medicaid eligible individuals as part of a comprehensive, public health approach to addressing the opioid crisis. To achieve this work:
