| Re: | Medication Oversight Procedures and Documentation |
This Notice informs Supportive Living Program (SLP) providers of the appropriate documentation procedures for medication oversight pursuant to 89 Ill. Adm. Code 146.230(d)(4).
Medication oversight provided by Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) staff may include verbal reminders and removal of medication that is set up by a pharmacy or licensed nurse from the storage location within the resident’s apartment. CNAs may also open the medication package or container. CNA staff cannot remove the medication from the package or container.
Documentation of medication oversight by CNA staff may identify either a specific time or a general time, such as morning, noon, or evening. CNA documentation of medication oversight cannot include the identification of a specific medication. Identification of specific medication must be done by licensed staff. Therefore, CNAs cannot identify specific medication or document the oversight service of specific medication. CNA staff shall document the medication oversight service by indicating the time the service was provided. Conversely, licensed nursing staff providing medication oversight must document each individual medication.
