Provider Notice issued 06/05/14

Prior Approval for Binaural Hearing Aids

To: Audiologists, Durable Medical Equipment and Supplies (DME) Providers, Physicians and Advanced Practice Nurses
Date: June 5, 2014
Re: Prior Approval for Binaural Hearing Aids

The purpose of this notice is to advise providers that effective for dates of service April 14, 2014, and after, the department will not require prior approval of binaural hearing aids as communicated in the February 11, 2014, Informational Notice, Prior Approval for Binaural Hearing Aids

If during the prior approval required time frame of February 15, 2014 through April 13, 2014, a monaural hearing aid was dispensed and a provider wants to dispense another monaural now, a prior approval will be required in order to prevent a claim rejection for duplicate service. This applies to both adults and children.

Providers should continue to document the medical necessity for binaural hearing aids in the patient medical record.

Questions regarding this notice should be directed to the Bureau of Professional and Ancillary Services at 1-877-782-5565, option 3, option 2.
