Re: Electronic Health Record Provider Incentive Payment (EHR/PIP) Program
The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) is part of the American Re-Investment and Recovery Act of 2009. Section 4210 of this act established an Electronic Health Record (EHR) Incentive Payment Program, which allows Medicaid to pay Eligible Professionals (EPs) that adopt, implement, and meaningfully use certified EHR technology.
The Medicaid EHR Provider Incentive Program is voluntarily offered by individual states and territories, and may begin in 2011, once the State has a federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) approved infrastructure in place to manage the program. The program will continue until 2021. The last year a Medicaid provider may begin participation in the program is 2016.
The Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) is currently planning for the administration of the program, and expects to begin making incentive payments to qualifying providers during the summer of 2011. If you are a Medicaid provider, interested in learning more about the incentive payments, please visit the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site.
On January 3, 2011, the federal CMS National Level Repository (NLR) began accepting registrations. While the NLR cannot accept Illinois registrations for EPs at this time, the section below informs providers what they may do now to begin preparing to meet the program requirements.
What can providers do now to prepare?
To be eligible to participate in this program, providers must also meet the following criteria:
