Provider Notice issued 02/28/11

Category of Service (COS) for Date of Death

To: Long Term Care Providers (Nursing Facilities Only)
Date: February 28, 2011
Re: Category of Service (COS) for Date of Death

The purpose of this notice is to inform nursing facilities of a systems change that will no longer automatically convert the COS of a Medicare resident for the day of death.

The HFS payment system previously converted the COS of a resident's date of death who was in a Medicare covered stay (COS 72 – Medicare Coinsurance) to a COS 70 – Medicaid Skilled Nursing Care or COS 71 – Medicaid Intermediate Nursing Care when the resident died.

This change will impact transactions processed on or after February 15, 2011, regardless of the date of service. For example, if a death date of January 1, 2011, is processed February 16, 2011, the date of death for a resident in a Medicare covered stay will remain a COS 72.

Facilities are reminded of the requirement to submit notification of any change in a resident's status within five working days per 89 Illinois Administrative Code 140.513, notification of Change in Resident Status.

Questions regarding this notice should be directed to the Bureau of Long Term Care at 1-217-782-0545.
