Hospice FFY 2009 Wage Index Revision Retroactive to October 1, 2008

Re: Hospice FFY 2009 Wage Index Revision Retroactive to October 1, 2008

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) notified the department of revisions to the hospice wage index impacting Medicaid hospice payment rates for Federal Fiscal Year 2009 (October 1, 2008, through September 30, 2009).

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Tax Act of 2009 required revisions to the hospice wage index previously published in the Federal Register on August 8, 2008. The hospice wage index has been revised to eliminate a reduction for the budget neutrality adjustment factor (BNAF), which had begun to be phased out over a three-year period beginning in FY 2009.

The department will perform automated adjustments for all claims paid under the original wage index. These adjustments will be identified on future remittance advices.

An updated hospice rate table identifying each Illinois county, its assigned Core-Based Statistical Area (CBSA), and corresponding wage index is posted to the department’s Web site. To assist hospices in identifying the wage index changes, the table includes both the wage index that was used for the original pricing of claims, and the revised wage index.

Any questions concerning this notice should be directed to your agency’s hospice billing consultant in the Bureau of Comprehensive Health Services at 1-877-782-5565.
