| Re: | National Provider Identifiers (NPI) |
This is to inform all long-term care providers, including nursing facilities, intermediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled and supportive living facilities, that it may be necessary for your facility to register for multiple National Provider Identifiers (NPIs).
If your facility is also enrolled as an oxygen and/or transportation provider, you must obtain an NPI for each provider type. The department takes the registered NPI number and crosswalks it to the department provider number assigned for that specific provider type. Without separate NPIs, the department does not know which provider number is applicable for the provider type being billed.
Although long-term care facilities do not submit claims to the Department for residential/facility services, an NPI must be used for submission of claims for non-institutional services such as oxygen and transportation. Facilities not enrolled as oxygen and transportation providers must have an NPI to conduct electronic transactions such as eligibility inquiries and claims status inquiries.
Information on NPIs, including how to apply, can be found on the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Web site.
Once you have obtained the NPI, you must register the NPI with the department at the Medical Electronic Data Interchange (MEDI) Web site to report NPI information.
