Prescriber National Provider Identifier (NPI)​

The Department of Healthcare and Family Services, in accordance with National Provider Identifier (NPI) regulations under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, will begin requiring the NPI of the prescriber on pharmacy claims beginning with claims submitted July 1, 2008. 

Prescriber ID is a required field (411-DB).  In a December 3, 2007, notice to pharmacies, the Department announced that, in the future, prescriber NPI would be required in the Prescriber ID field.

Currently, very few pharmacy claims contain the prescriber NPI.  Pharmacies continue to submit claims using other identification numbers in the Prescriber ID field.  Pharmacies should begin obtaining and using prescriber NPIs as soon as possible.
