This addendum to the Informational Notice dated December 13, 2006, regarding National Provider Identifier (NPI) Implementation, is being issued to provide clarification on the mandatory reporting of NPIs.

This addendum, issued by HFS on January 25, 2007, is now considered a part of the December 13, 2006 notice.

Important Information Regarding National Provider Identifier (NPI) Implementation

The mandatory reporting of the NPI on claims received by the department on or after May 23, 2007, only applies to the billing provider.  Providers will not be required to submit the NPI for payees with the May 23, 2007 NPI implementation.  Providers should continue to report the 1-digit payee code to designate their appropriate payee.
