Personal Care and General Healthcare Equipment and Supplies

A June 27, 2005, Informational Notice to all participating medical assistance providers regarding discontinuing coverage of certain over-the-counter (OTC) drugs through the pharmacy system has resulted in a number of questions from long term care facilities. The Department has always required that these and any other OTC items be provided to residents as part of the facility’s Medicaid per diem. This notice only reaffirmed the Department’s existing policy.

The Long Term Care Provider Handbook, Section C-230, Covered Items, discusses items and services the facility is required to provide as part of its per diem. Appendix C-26 of the handbook gives a detailed list of examples of these types of items. This list has been revised to include the items listed in the above referenced informational notice.
