| Re: | HIPAA Contingency Plan Update: Termination of NSF and UB92 Electronic Claim Formats |
The Illinois Department of Public Aid (IDPA) is announcing a termination date for its contingency plan regarding HIPAA electronic claim formats. Presently, IDPA accepts electronic claims in the National Standard Format (NSF) and UB92 electronic formats as well as the new HIPAA-mandated electronic formats (837I – Institutional, 837P – Professional). The contingency plan allows providers and their software vendors a means to work toward compliance while minimizing disruptions to operations and cash flow.
Effective December 1, 2004, IDPA will no longer accept electronic claims in the NSF or UB92 formats. All electronic claims submitted on December 1, 2004, and after, regardless of the date of service must be in the HIPAA-mandated 837I and 837P formats.
It is imperative that you, your software systems, vendors and clearinghouses view the coming months as an opportunity to finalize your transition, while dual systems and formats are supported. It is also very important that this transition begin for you immediately, if not already underway. It is the responsibility of each provider to ensure that all material related to changes in the department’s billing procedures, handbooks, etc., are shared with their software vendor, corporate help desk or information systems area.
