Provider Notice issued 04/30/03

Elimination of State Generated Procedure Codes - HIPAA Implementation

To: Enrolled Podiatrists
Date: April 30, 2003
Re: Elimination of State Generated Procedure Codes - HIPAA Implementation

The Department is in the process of converting state generated "W" procedure codes and obsolete procedure codes to the appropriate Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) or Health Care Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes. This is being done to prepare for compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Beginning with dates of service June 1, 2003 and after, state generated "W" procedure codes and obsolete procedure codes assigned to services provided by podiatrists will be eliminated. The Department is opening several CPT and HCPCS codes for podiatrist to use in place of the eliminated procedure codes. Attached are tables which identify the procedure codes that are being closed and opened. Claims received with the state generated "W" procedure codes or the obsolete procedure codes for dates of service June 1, 2003 and after, will be rejected.

A complete listing of procedure codes billable by a podiatrist can be found on the Department's website at <http://www.dpaillinois.com/feeschedule/>.

Any questions regarding this notice should be directed to the Bureau of Comprehensive Health Services at 217-782-5565.
