Re: New Chapter 300: Handbook for Electronic Processing, a supplement to the X12 and NCPDP Implementation Guides - HIPAA Implementation

In preparation for the implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Illinois Department of Public Aid is publishing its HIPAA companion guides through a new document titled Chapter 300: Handbook for Electronic Processing.  The information contained in Chapter 300 is a supplement to the X12 (4010A1) or NCPDP (5.1 or 1.1 batch) Implementation Guides. This new handbook contains the companion guides for all providers who will be submitting X12 or NCPDP electronic transactions to the Department.  Chapter 300, in conjunction with the Handbook for Providers of Medical Services, Chapter 100: General Policy and Procedures, and the applicable Chapter 200, provide information necessary for providers to receive payment.  The Department anticipates additional changes to this handbook prior to the October 16, 2003 HIPAA implementation date.  As information and material is finalized, you will receive notification of updates to the handbook.

This notice also corrects an error in the Department's March 10, 2003 Informational Notice regarding HIPAA Claim Formats.  The notice referred to the X-12 837, Version 4010 and should have referred to X-12 837, Version 4010A1.

Chapter 300: Handbook for Electronic Processing, a supplement to the X12 and NCPDP Implementation Guides is available on the Department's website at <http://www.illinois.gov/hfs/MedicalProviders/Handbooks/Pages/default.aspx>.  It is in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF).  In order to view or print the documents, you will need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.  Adobe Acrobat Reader is available to download FREE from the Adobe homepage at <http://www.adobe.com>.  Printed copies are available upon written request.  To ensure delivery, specify a physical street address when making a request for a paper copy.  Submit your written request or fax to:
